Following the popular bicycle sharing projects in other French cities, the Paris municipality launched its own program in 2007, providing 20,000 heavy duty bikes, stationed at 750 designated racks throughout the city. A simple swipe of a transit card gives locals and visitors a free ride and reduces the number of cars on busy Paris streets.
