• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Squares & Plazas in Paris, Ile-de-France.
Located in Paris' famous Montmartre district, the picturesque Place du Tertre is perhaps second only to the Sacre Coeur as the arrondissement's main tourist attraction. In the early 1900s, many artists (some of them well known) lived in the area and painted at this square and today the tradition carries on. Each day, dozens of artists set up their easels and offer their works to the hundreds of passing tourists.
This historic treasure in the 1st arrondissement of Paris was designed by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and has a rich history since being planned in 1702. The area is now home to high end jewelers and was the site of the 1998 film of the same name starring Catherine Deneuve.
Formerly known as Place de l'Étoile, the plaza was renamed Place Charles de Gaulle in 1970. This plaza surrounds the Arc de Triomphe and is the meeting point of 12 avenues. To the east, is the infamous avenue Champs-Élysées.
Named after a French colonel who fought in the French-Prussian war of 1870, Place Denfert-Rochereau is home to a variety of notable statues, including the Lion of Belfort. It also marks the entrance to the catacombs, which are filled with skeletal remains.
