Chappelle Expiatoire

Arc de Triomphe
+ My Favorites
The Arc de Triomphe was constructed in honour of Napoleon's imperial victories and his troops. Completed in 1836, this monument stands 50 meters tall and 45 meters wide (164 by 148 feet). The two piers of the arc are intricately decorated with bas reliefs that depict scenes from the revolutionary era: the Marseillaise, Napoleon's Triumph of 1810, the resistance of 1814 and the Peace of 1815. Beneath the arc lays the body of the Unknown Soldier, which was found in Verdun in Lorraine following WWI. Since 1923, three years after the soldier's body was buried here, a flame has burned to commemorate his fate and the fate of countless others who were killed in war. The flame is rekindled each evening at 6:30. Nearly three hundres steps take visitors to the top of the observation platform where views of the world's largest traffic roundabout and Champs-Elysees, what many people believe is the most beautiful street in the world, are clearly visible.

The Pantheon
+ My Favorites
The Panthéon is a neoclassically designed former abbey and burial site for some of the most notable figures in French history, including Victor Hugo, Louis Braille, and Alexandre Dumas, whose coffin was finally transferred to the site in 2002. With its location on higher ground, it also offers stupendous views of the city of Paris.

Colonne de Vendome
+ My Favorites
The Colonne de Vendôme was constructed over the course of four years, and was completed in 1810. The structure, which stands over 44 m (144 ft) high, was commissioned to commemorate the French victory in the Battle of Austerlitz. The stone core was encased in bronze, which had been melted down from canons used in the conflict.
